Hi

I want to go to Russia as an independent traveller. I will fly London to Moscow, catch a train to Saint Petersburg, then fly back to London. About 8 to 10 days in total.

It seems straightforward except for the visa.

1. I believe I will need to provide invitation from a hotel. So I must book a hotel before I can get the visa? Is that correct? What if I use AirBnB?

2 As above re flights. Do I need to book flights before I apply for visa?

3 How strict are the entry and exit dates? I won’t arrive till on or after the date on my visa but I might want to extend my trip. If I say I will stay two weeks can I come back earlier?

4 How long does the visa take to process? Is there any way to expedite this?

4 If anyone has experience of this I would be grateful to hear.

I am a UK citizen.

Many thanks!

There are a multitude of 'visa application services' which promise to get you a visa to almost anywhere but the vast majority of them are simply scammers who charge you a fee for what you can do yourself anyway.

However VFS Global (as in 237SJ's link) provides the OFFICIAL visa application service for Russian visas. (i.e. the Russian Embassy in London has outsourced the process to VFS Global and it's VFS Global's website that you'll be redirected to if you seek out visa information on the Embassy website).

Start here
http://ru.vfsglobal.co.uk/
Click 'Private' if you'll be be visiting family or friends. Click 'Business', 'Special Events' or 'Tourist', as appropriate, otherwise.

Note that, while the application form is available online, attendance at a VFS Global visa centre (London, Manchester or Edinburgh) is compulsory.

Some of the questions in your post are answered on this FAQs page:

Email [email protected] for further information or call 0905 889 0149 (M-F, 0830-1730, 55p per minute on top of your normal call charges).
PS: There's further information about processing times available on the VFS Global website by first clicking on the relevant type of visa and then clicking the 'Processing Time' tab at the top of the page.
