I don't think this should be in History - try Body & Soul.
For what it's worth, you should absorb lessons from failed relationships and then file it and move on. Doesn't mean you can't revisit it - but it is under control. You are maundering on obsessively i.m.o.. Re-post, please for more opinions.

How do you change it into a different category
If the Ed was around, she would move it. As she is not, you will have to repost...I'd suggest Body and Soul.
Apparently, if you keep thinking about something it stays in the frontal lobes of your brain (which is the part that processes information). Normally that information would pass into another part of the brain where it is filed away, so to speak. If you continue to dwell, the info/feelings stay in the frontal lobes and that is why you can't move on. Have you tried CBT?
Look, I am now 70 (how that happened, I don't know) but in the early hours of the morning if I wake-up - I can find myself miserably thrashing myself mentally for something that happened over 50 years ago. It takes a minute to shove it away. You may need some guidance/counselling about how to do this. I could add a word of hope - I've finally found myself in a happy marriage and relegated most problems to the places they belong.. I'm unsure about what you mean about 'one night stands' … never done that sort of thing and your sentence is rather muddled. I'm a Christian, so that helped me.

I repeat, re-post in 'Body & Soul' please. :)
You attach to the past possibly because you aren't making the most of the present.
What do you want out of life ? What are you doing to bring it about ? Do you go out socialising ? Join a club, get to know folk.
Why don't you consider meeting other people? Maybe join a dating site and see how that goes. Dwelling on things that happened years ago isn't good for you mentally. Move on.

My ex split with me just before Xmas 2019 and I was heartbroken but I'm moving on and trying to focus on other/new things.
