I am trying to find a website which sell contemporary princess cut diamond engagement rings, everything I seem to find is much of a muchness, I want something hand crafted & modern.

I had the same problem! Try Dinny Hall, Diana Porter and Zebra. German designers also offer precision rings (very angular and modern), beautiful princess cut diamonds and stunning alternatives to traditional rings. Diana Porter is a former jewellery designer of the year who's rings have a contemporary, crafty feel. She's does commissions - not cheap though - my diamond isn't very big for the money! Alternatively, buy a diamond and ask a jewellery maker to make the setting and ring - it's may not be as expensive as you think.
