piercings and school policies

I am not sure where to post this......
My daughter had her belly button pierced for her 13th birthday which was only a few weeks ago. Now her school will not let her do P.E unless she takes it out. She cannot remove it for 3 months!
Today I put a HUGE plaster over it so there was no possible chance of anything getting caught on it or it causing any problems, but that wasn't good enough for the school. They have now said that my daughter will do 2 after school detentions which are an hour each for not doing P.E, and she faces being put in isolation and even exclusion.
How is this fair??? Nowhere in the school policy does it mention such piercings, just facial and earrings. I can fully understand the health and safety issues but if it's covered I dont see the problem.
After the 3 months both myself and my daughter have no problem in her removing it for P.E, but whilst its healing she cant. Why should she be punished for that!!
Before some people start going on that a child of her age shouldnt have piercings.... please dont bother. Or those who would say she should of had it at the begining of summer holidays... i didnt choose her birth day!!
Thanks in advance

Arrange to see the head teacher and explain to her that it's not stated anywhere that it's not allowed.
Just one question.. for what purpose did your daughter get it done??

Well personal feelings aside on this subject I think i'd have checked with the school regarding their policy on this before i'd allow my daughter to have that done.
And I'm afraid I'd eventually feel that I'd have no alternative but to abide by their ruling and take the ring out. Is this worth the hassle you and more importantly your daughter is going to go through?

I dont see what the problem is. I know some schools complain about hair being syed too! I mean, what the hell difference does it make?
I would go and talk calmly to the headteacher, ask where exactly it says in the school rules anything about piercings. Dont let them bully you, it's up to you and your daughter what happens to her body, not them.

Oh and Pechy - There isnt actually a legal age limit, last time I was in my local tattoo shop getting a piercing I asked him what the age limit is because my son wants his eyebrow done, he said there is no legal limit but he doesnt like to do it younger than 14 and even then he isnt keen because schools moan about it.
oops in my first post I meant hair getting "dyed" not "syed" lol and in second i obviously meant Peachy not Pechy
I think its pretty clear that nwtrikette isnt gonna sue, especially as she says she understands the health and safety issues and once it is healed she has no problem with it being removed for PE.
Anyway I have never in my life had any of my piercings 'ripped out' and sued someone, why should hers be? Its covered and they are in pe for goodness sake, what on earth would they be doing to rip out a navel stud?

Well, I'm not sure many responsible mothers would allow a 13 year old child to have her belly button pierced. You're supposed to be her parent, supervising her well-being, not egging her on as if you're her teenage best friend !
Wouldn't it be nice if parents actually supported their kids' schools and teachers when they're trying to impose some discipline and safety rules, instead of constantly undermining them?. If the plaster actually fell off and your daughter was injured during PE I bet you'd be the first to start complaining about health & safety and wanting compensation. Honestly, didn't you give any thought to the fact that her piercing could go wrong and she might have ended up with a serious infection?

geeessss i dont know why i bother with this site anymore!!!!!!!!!!
I come on here to get a bit of advice and all i get is grief!!!!!! It is only a PIERCING FOR GOODNESS SAKE.
LOUKR .... She has wanted it done for over 12 months as all her friens have it,
PEACHY51 ..... 12 is the legal age for body piercings!
MAKEMESMILE ..... She already has a motorbike and has ridden since she was 6. NOT that that has anything to do with the topic or is of anyone elses business. You really shouldn't try to stereo-type us bikers!!
WENDYS..... Im not even going to lower myself to your level.
Well, if nothing else, at least I now know not to ask for advice on here again.

To mycats-there isn't a legal age limit but if you're under sixteen(and reputable places would ask for I.D) you need a parent/guardian signature. But it's too late to moralise, the girl's mother has been irresponsible and is now having to pay the price. There probably is something in the small print in the school rules about piercings, and loads of girls at my daughters school take no notice but do try and be discreet. The only thing I would suggest is talk to the head teacher and explain things,as well as apologise for your action, and then remove it after the three months for school.
If they mention earrings surely you must have realised that
other jewellry was forbidden?

ah dont let them upset you nwtrikette, I was told (on here) that any parent who makes (lol) their child get a mohawk is a yopb and shouldnt be allowed to breed! My son has had one on and off since he was tiny, and my 10 year old son has a motorbike, some people are just so up themselves they feel the need to be rude!
" That's why they have a uniform. Get it? The clue's in the word" ?? Patronising git!!

II have to admit that I am suprised about her age and wanting one since she was 12.
But I'm not going to have a go or anything because it was your decision as her guardian, whatever anybody else feels about this issue.
I think the school is imposing this role purely for your daugthers safety. anything could happen despite it seeming that a plaster would stop anything getting snagged. for example when i was at school a lad from my year had his finger ripped off in a game of footy on the goal posts. even the pe teachers wear their wedding rings so it shows how easy it is for bad things to happen.
I would suggest talking to the head, agreeing she can't particapate in sports but try and get her out of detentions and any further trouble promising that you will take care of her PE education in the meantime. a sorta comprimise if you will.

GANESH.... sorry but I dont know where you got your information from but it is wrong. My daughters piercing was done buy a very close friend of mine who has her own tattoo and piercing shop. There IS a legal age limit of 12yrs old but it is up to the piercer as to what age they are happy to do. As for me being irresponsible..... yeah whatever! The mention of earrings in the school policy simply states that only small hoops or studs may be worn so NO I didnt realize that other jeweller may be forbidden.
MYCAT..... Thanks. My younger daughter came home with a letter from school the other day saying that if any child comes into school with gel on their hair they will be sent home!! Do hair produce alter a childs learning ability!!! Its daft!
