Contraception
18 Answers
I have been married for 8 years and my wife has had to come off of the injection for health reasons. Now for the last 3 months we have been using condoms, which i dislike but she prefers (probably due to mess issues:-). Do people who have been married for this long still use condoms as a form of contraception??
Shes doesnt see my point, 8 years of marriage and we're using condoms!!!!!

I was with my husband for 12 years and in all that time he used the condom because i couldnt take the pill (again due to health reasons). I never heard him complain once and was very happy that he didnt force me to take any other form of intrusive contraceptive.
Of course, if you were to try for a baby then condoms would not be required but whats a bit of rubber compared to sleepless nights and dirty nappies :)

Well I've been married for 17 years and, until I became sterile about 5 years ago (a side effect of some medical treatment), we used condoms except on the occasions when we were trying for a baby.
OK, so you don't like using condoms, but they are a minor inconvenience compared to the health issues your wife has with injections, and presumably would also have with the pill.
Try having your wife put them on for you as part of foreplay, or consider other alternatives and discuss them with her (there is the diaphragm as lady_p_gold suggested, and Superdrug are doing their own brand ovulation kits as a BOGOF at the moment). You could also be very grown up and consider taking the responsibility for contraception on yourself by having a vasectomy !

Sorry but I have to agree with everyone else. It's about time you did your turn mate! It really annoys me when men think women should be responsible for contraception. If she had to come off the injection then Im assuming it was because of the hormones? There are few other non-hormonal methods, and condoms are definitely the safest. If it wasn't for health reasons then I may have sympathy for you, but I think you are being selfish.
If you had any idea of some of the long term hormonal side effects which some women can suffer from either as a result of taking the pill or injections, I think you might think again. Surely your wife's long term health is more important than the inconvenience you are suffering. She has had eight years of having this stuff pumped into her body so I don't the three months of minor inconvenience you are suffering really enters into the equasion, neither should the length of time you have been married. If you don't like using condoms, you could always abstain ! I don't expect women much enjoy the pain of childbirth either, so you're getting off pretty lightly.
The question wasn't about whether or not men like using condoms. I never did like using them, but if my partner's health was being affected by her use of contraceptives I'd tell her to come off them and switch to using condoms.
Frankly I think Andy's attitude is, to put it mildly, selfish. After all, given the way the question was put, one might get the impression that, from Andy's point of view, it is up to his wife to find a solution which allows him not to use condoms. It would be more sensible for him to do a bit of homework on alternative methods which do not cause health issues for his wife, then discuss the options with her and see which method suits both of them best. For heaven's sake ... he doesn't even appear to know why his wife prefers condoms !

Condoms are less intrusive really, and men who says they don't like them, are probably just being selfish, as somebody else already said here. They want to have their pleasure no matter what the woman is feeling... c'mon guys.
Anyway you can also be a little more creative to make something seem more fun, for example me and my fianc we use mint condoms and it's lovely the refreshing sensation, it makes the whole thing more interesting. There are many kinds of condoms not just the plain average boring one.

Yeah, well, I'm female and in a steady relationship, and in terms of preference, I *hate* condoms. They really put me off the whole thing, and especially the constant anxiety of something going wrong, just kills sex for me. However, there are a lot of side effects from hormonal treatment, I have recently stopped taking the pill because the built up side effects of 7 years of taking it have been so terrible (serious PMS, mood swings, no libido, etc). So even when there are no side effects that cause actual 'illness', there are side effects. I would advise you both looking into different forms of contraceptive together, even considering the possibility of sterilisation, and seriously talk about the pros and cons of each before making a commitment.
Have you had children Andy? When we had had ours I had trouble with pills due to children affecting my hormone levels. We decided we had enough children and did not want any more so what to do? We used condoms for a while and Mr W hated them, they did not bother me too much so he had the snip. It was his choice although he had once declared he would never have it done he felt the time was right. If you dont want the snip then simply look for other options like caps etc. I do agree that after trying several pills I put my foot down and said I had had hormones pumped into me for the last 10 years it was his turn. Comdoms are not just for the newley married and the youngsters you know and as someone said if they are the only option work with them and use your imagination instead of against them
