When a couple get divorced do they each get half of the value of the house even if one of them is earning at least twice the amount of money as the other?

as far as i understand it yes as long as both your names r on the mortgage
Assuming the property was purchased in joint names and that you didnt make any arrangements for a different split in the event of divorce then yes it would be fair to split it 50:50

However when my husband and I got divorced 5 years ago, I was earning a lot more than him so I decided to move out and sign my half over to him to counteract any maintenance I would otherwise pay for the children.

It really depends on how ammicable things are with your other half and whether either of you wants to stay in the house I suppose.
When my first wife and I divorced. after 27 years of marriage the net proceeds fom the house were split 70/30 in her favour even though I had paid for everything. The mortgage only had 5 years before it was paid off. She wanted 90/10 but I had a good lawyer. I accepted the above figure if she passed on having half my pension, to which she agreed.
