I always find myself in the situation where i like the shy girls, and i can never get them to talk to me, or ill try small talk and they will give me one word answers, how do i avoid small word answers and get an actual conversation going so i can get to know the person or mayb even become their friend at least?

To break the ice I usually start with "Hello" and it rolls from there. I'm a shy girl and I know that I wont do the first move, but when someone talks to me...I respond.

Anyone's most fascinating subject is ... them!
If you are getting one-word answers, you may be talking to someone who is equally shy! Try a few different neutral conversation topics - music and films are always good, and once the other person starts to talk, let them roll with it, asking just enough to kep the conversation going.
Try not to feel nervous, it communicates with non-verbal signals, and makes another stranger feel nervious as well.
The art of conversation is being relaxed, and interested, in that order - not to b confused with trying to be 'interesting' - which can make you sound like a self-centered bore!
Good luck.

Don't ask questions which allow a yes or no answer. Ask open ended questions using When, Why, What, How, Which and Who. Using these types of words requires the response to be more indepth and gets the other person talking from which more questions can be formulated and it is virtually impossible to answer yes/no. Its worth reading up on a few basic sales, marketing and net-working techniques as these business skills are naturally transferable to many aspects of life where you are building relationships and creating rapport.
Good luck

You just have to find that one topic that makes them sparkle! I used to be really shy around any guys I liked, but as soon as we got onto a conversation subject that i was interested in then the shyness goes away and you can feel comfortable talking, as you know the subject!
If you like them then just keep talking till you find that subject. Once you've got it, other topics should be easier to talk about.
Or get them drunk, that usually loosen's shy girl's up lol
