I was taking my time moving to Berkeley, traveling around the country first, and while I was traveling I met some friends of his, who told me he was looking to rent out a room in his house to help pay the mortgage. They promised to give me his number, and then the subject got changed and they forgot. A couple of days later, my friend and I were about to get back on the road, and my friend drove the car into a ditch, so we had to wait for an hour or two to get it pulled out. Finally, we were about to drive off, and my husbands friends ran up and gave me his number at the last minute, just as we were leaving.
I'm normally shy, and wouldn't usually call someone out of the blue like that, but it was my birthday, and I felt a bit reckless so I called him. When I got to Berkeley I met with him, and moved in a few days later. 6 months later we got together as a couple. 8 years later, here we are!
One week-end in 1963, I was staying with my brother & sister-in-law. I had been washing up & my sis-in-law asked me to put the clean milk bottles outside on the doorstep. My brother was on that doorstep chatting to his 'friend' who lived next door. As I put the milk bottles down, I glanced up at his 'friend' & as our eyes met, I got butterflies in my stomach! I shot back into the kitchen to ask sis-in-law who this friend with jet black hair, swarthy skin & gorgeous eyes was.
Two weeks later, I went to visit my brother & sis-in-law again & when I turned up, there was a note on the front door reading 'Collect key from next door, we've had to pop out, won't be long'. I did this & guess who answered - yes, the boy who gave me butterflies in my stomach. He asked me if I'd like to go to Battersea Fun Fair & although I was really shy, I replied 'yes'. Along we went to the fair, shared our first kiss at the end of a wonderful evening. We married a year later & the rest is history. (I later found out that he had told my brother that he fancied me too & the note was a set up by my brother & sis-in-law!)
Well fancy that FP - shame BFF it's no longer there!
Another coincidence is that years later when chatting to Mum, she told me that she met Dad at a fun fair in 1926. They married in 1931, went on to have ten children, me being the 7th! They were married for 63 years, until Dad passed away in 1994! (P.S. Dad always worked & was in no way a Chav!).
