I am experiencing symptoms of depression, and some people think that it could be early onset bipolar. I want to see my GP about it, but I don't want my parents to find out that I have been to see my doctor. My mother has not been supportive at all. I haven't raised the issue with her and when she discovered that I have self harmed before, she shouted at me and thought that ending it was as simple as making me promise not to do it again. I am NOT an attention seeker or jumping on the "emo" bandwagon, I am deeply ashamed of the fact that I have self harmed and just want to help myself. Should I go to see my GP?

Yes of course you should, you don`t mention your age but you shouldn`t worry about the doctor telling parents really and mention your concerns in that direction too.

Good luck.
Yes you should ASAP, you obviously need help. If your mother is not supportive, see your GP they should be able to help you. Once you have seen your GP hopefully they will be able to advise you. When you know more you can then tell your mother what is going on. You may need counselling, but don't let that put you off, help is out there. Only the doctor can really tell you what is going on.

Take care, I hope you can get it sorted.

please go and see your g.p. It will stay confidential!

I've had bouts of depression in the past, so can sympathise. Sometimes just talking can help, it did in my case --no tablets or medication.

i hope you sson feel lots better , good luck x pusskin
I should also add there is absolutely no reason to feel shame, depression (if that is what you have) is as valid as any other health issue.

Hello kurt - only just read this....

I do hope you have given it more thought since reading the other helpful posts & will go back to see your GP. You could also explain to him/her that your Mother isn't very understanding &/or supportive. Very odd for a Mother, but she may just be afraid.

Please make an appointment asap, as doctors are there to help you.

I wish you well. -xx-
yes - go and see your GP.
You sound quite young - do you mind me asking how old?
You have nothing to be ashamed of, you just need help and support.
My 19 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with bi polar and my brother has it too.
Its manageable with medication and the right support.
Please go and see your G.P where they can refer you to have a assessment.
Take care x
