... I was reading an article about the young ex-soldier who has been sentenced to jail in Turkey. He talked about his fiancée and I thought that it was a very long time since I heard or saw that word. Is it now obsolete?

No. Mr BM and I use it all the time.

Can’t say I hear it that often, though I would use it myself.

"Stepping out" was another synonym for courting.
I would use it if we were engaged, I hear it here and there x
I thought she as using it so that it gave her some purchase when visiting him

I mean Jesus you fight for one side and then go on holiday to a resort in the other side
