It also seems to depend upon the area you live, a scouse friend of mine swears we are all giants down in the west country, whereas in the north people tend to be of smaller stature.
In a study released today it is claimed that the average height for a UK male is 5'9. Each year there seems to be a conflicting study released, usually stating the avg. height is around 5'8 to 5'10. Basically, there is no correct answer but if you're around the afore mentioned heights I'd say you're "average".
The Average height for an American and Australian male is 5'9", I'd be very surprised if men were taller on average in the UK. The tallest people in the world are the Dutch. Their average male height is 5'11.5". That included Africa (where there are seperate tribes that grow very tall (average over 6'0", but the national average is shorter than developed 1st world countries).
This does include a lot of the older generation that are shorter. Male height has been going up at a rate of 1cm per decade for the last 10 years. The average height of males under 40 would probably be about 5'10"
Also keep in mind that most people drasticly exagerate their height. An average male of 5'9" will usually tell you he is 5'11". Common "slips" are converting cm to inches using 2.5cm as an "inch" instead of 2.54cm. Some people even measure themselves in their shoes!
I am 182cm (a scratch below 6'0") and people are usually embarrassed when they compare heights to me, as they claim to be 6'1" or even 6'2" and I tell them that's impossible because I'm 5'11" and taller than them! None will ever take up the challange of getting out a tape measure and confirming it, because they don't want to know how tall they really are.
To cut a long story short: 5'9" would be a very, very safe bet.
I believe that the average height in Britain is more than that of the Americans. I went to America a couple of times and noticed that people seemed to be a little shorter than the guys at home. I reckon I'm about 5' 7" and almost everyone at school was alot taller then me. My answer is that the average under 25 white male in uk is about 5' 11" and the under 25 asian male is 5' 9".
I'm a 28 year old guy from Canada and stand 6 foot even. I routinely notice at bars, on the street, at work that there are a heck of a lot of tall guys around. Guys that are 6-5 are a dime a dozen and it would appear most guys under 25 are over 6 foot easy. At the same time you would expect to see a comparable number in the 5-5 or 5-6 range but they are few and far between. I think the average height of 5-10 is obviously outdated and quite old and I think each half generation is picking up a lot of ground. I would think Great Britain would be similar to Canada because we are of similar stock except for added French, German, Irish, and Italian in canada.
Dude, what I said above is 100% correct, it's not a point to be argued.
If you think that guys that are 6'5" are "a dime a dozen" I suspect you really don't know how tall that is. Statistic percentile bands (this is not a guess, it's statistics) say that only 2% of the male population are 6'5" or over.
The average male height in America is 5'9". Again, I'm not guessing here. (Try a search on google and see how many of them agree with me)
Try taking your shoes off and measuring yourself, back to the wall in all honestly and see how tall you really are. Most people exagerate their height by more than an inch, that's why they think the "average height" is 5'10" or 5'11" - because they exagerate everyone else too. Average IS 5'9" - but as old people die off it will probably get taller. Probably within 5'10" or 5'11" in the next 50 years.
That's not a guess, if you're interested in the truth - that's it.
I think the real issue here is "does height matter?", for maybe females or for social status and whether if your short does this make you less of a man? well i'm 16 and at 5ft7 and I think the average is around 6ft+, because every one seems taller than me, but i don't care how tall I am as long as girls don't care how tall I am!!!(wink-wink:-)
First thing's first you can't judge a guy solely on his height. I'm from Canada and the average height there for a guy is about 5'10'' to the guy who said average height for a guy is 6ft + that is wrong more guys are below 6 feet not to mention alot of guys exaggerate about their height if a guy is 5'11'' he'll probably say he's 6'0'' alot of guys are considerably taller then average (5'10'') and alot of guys are considerably shorter as well I'm 5'7'' and I've been the same height since I was about 15 although I am below average I don't consider myself to be that short because a large population of guys at my highschool were around the same height as me I'm almost 19 so the chances of me growing another 3 inches are pretty slim it doesn't matter how tall a guy anyway being tall doesn't make you a man becoming a man is something you have to work at something you have to earn height has nothing to do with it
The Average height for a male is 5'9'' it's hard to believe for some people but most men and woman lie about their height or they wear heels and platform shoes I'm only 5'8'' people call me short but really, I'm only an inch below average give me break joeyjojo very few guys are 6'5'' and over you most not know how tall that really is
