How can I find out who owns what garden fence as the neighbours do not know. I looked at the deeds (very old) and it shows a 'T' on one side fence and the back fence. Does that mean they are my responsibility?
simple answer is that you can't. If anyone of your neighbours has erected or repaired a fence then they may have accepted ownership by default or, as in my case, if you can prove that the fence predates the construction of your house, then that would indicate that you don't own it but apart from that, if there is no agreement among neighbours then you can't know. The "T' is an indicator but not a definitive statement.
This is a question I find interesting. My siblings and I still own the house our late parents bought. All the time I was growing up it was insisted that the wall to our left (as we faced the house) belonged to the neighbour and I should not sit upon it. Now that folk have died and there are new owners, the wall is in disrepair and my brother tells me the present owners continually disclaim any responsibility to fixing it and claim it is ours. Apparently it isn't ours when it is beneficial to be ours, but it is when there is money to be spent on it.
My late parents insisted it wasn't our wall throughout my life.
It isn't safe, every year it is in worst condition that the last. Luckily I'm not living there any more. It could easily topple over onto our path if it got much worse.
