He messaged me yesterday saying the money was available to collect. When I was working for him wages were always paid in cash and collected from the premises.
I pointed out that I now live in Devon some 70 miles from him and I gave him my bank details. He responded saying that I need to collect them in person or nominate someone to pick them up. This would cost me a further £60 on the train. Can he insist on forcing me to pick up the cash owed? I don’t think I’m being unreasonable in asking him to put the money straight in my bank account.

I don't think you're being unreasonable but on the other hand he isn't "forcing" you to do anything. If I wanted the money (you don't say how much it is) I would find some way to collect it from him.

I disagree. In the extreme case of non-payment bailiffs would visit the debtor & accept any direct means of payment offered - cash or debit card - or by seizure & sale of property. The creditor cannot insist upon payment by any one particular method.

Another alternative is do you know and trust anyone still in the area that will collect and transfer the money to you?

Have a day out in the area and collect your dosh while you're there. Sounds like it could be worth it. Or get a relative to drive you and have a day out with them. But that's only what I would do.
