Someone must presumably own the right to the trade name. If they insist it's the same shop, who's to say otherwise. Presumably Shop Direct still owns it https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woolworths_Group
I can't see the need for Woolworths as other shops have filled the gap. The myriad of pound shops, B&M and The Range more than cover the old Woolworth's range
Woolworths online has been going for years so someone kept the name going. Remember searching for something a while back and Woolworths site came up. I was quite surprised.
Woolworths were somewhere in the middle with what they stocked between pound shops and the Range.
Neither the Range nor B and M are High street shops. Not here anyway...they are in retail parks. A bit difficult to get to if you don't drive. Woolies was, so very convenient.
I expect Wilko won't be very happy about that. Still, there should be lots of premises for Woolworths to choose from judging by the state of the high street. The Woolworth name still exists in South Africa but when you walk in, it is a replica of M&S.
And we really need yet another contributor to help fill the planet with even more plastic junk, along with a government that thinks it necessary to keep the Halloween isles open to buy more junk. We are without doubt our own worst enemy.
B&M is in my local high street in an ex supermarket store. I forgot about Wilko's - that is opposite B&Ms in my town. As you can tell, we have lots of high end designer shops :D
The online Woolies was created by Littlewoods and has nothing to do with the original Woolworths. The link that Apc posted doesn't get me to Woolworths online, it only tells me who owns the site with links to Very, Littlewoods and other catalogues
The Woolworth's store in my town was taken over by B & M and does a roaring trade. It drove the local Poundstretcher, which was always prosperous, out of business.
I wonder if Woolworths will take Dido Harding back.
She was head of Marketing shortly before it closed. After that she took her midas touch to the now defunct Thomas Cook. She ended her retail career at TalkTalk where she lost millions of customers after a security breach.
