How would you estimate the number of people wearing necktie on a particular day in delhi. Which steps you would take to estimate the right number.

Why on earth would anyone WANT to know the number of people wearing neckties in Delhi?

I don't know, maybe count 100 random people, see how many of these are wearing ties and then extrapolate the result to reflect the population of Delhi?

Obviously standing outside an office block and counting the first 100 people would not give a true result...

The answer is not the actual answer!

The interviewer wold probably have no idea of the number of people in Delhi wearing a necktie.

The question is asked to see HOW you would get to the answer. It is a test of your problem-solving abilities, ability to be inventive and is also designed to make you ill at ease a little.

There isn't a right answer.

Yes you are right. Even I dint ask for right number of people wearing tie, I asked for the sterps to be taken to anser such questions. Any idea about this?

I would take the number of people in Delhi and then use a basic calculation of the number of people employed in a profession requiring a tie. I would then subtract the percentage of female workers in these professions as an assumption that it would only be men wearing them. I would then subtract the required amount for the number of people off sick. I wouild then attempt to validate this answer by the survey method suggested by CheekyChops below.

Or I may just say there are none as they are not referred to as neckties in Delhi.
