My father in law would like to have his state pension paid into his post office acount, on the application form it asks for ac number and sort code but the account only has a number and not a sort code, can he just leave the sort code blank?

Ask for advice at your local post office. Leaving it blank would probably cause problems
There probably is a sort code. If he omits the sort code they won't know which financial institution it is for.

Look on here-only certain PO accounts accept pension payments.

Ring the helpline or ask at the post office. Or the PO website may help
The sort code and account number will appear on his statements.

If it doesn't have a sort code then it's unlikely that it can be used to receive pension payments

Exactly what sort of Post Office account does he have?
If it's the Post Office card account (the purple card) then he should have received the account number and sort code when the account was opened.
