Hi ABers, Happy New Year to you; one and all!
Anyone know the correct way to transfer Direct Debits? I am transferring my banking to a different but, EXISTING account and therefore the bank will not provide the usual transfer service on my behalf. I need to know the correct procedure and time scale requirements please guys!
As usual TIA & all help gratefully acknowledged.

Get in touch with people who you are paying and inform them of the new account to be debited, time wise depends on them, how long they take to enter on system etc, make sure you tell them it is an amendment to the account number only. Best and easiest way.

Cheers for that KJN, do you think they would accept notification by phone followed in writing or by E mail?
Doubt it. Unlike standing orders, direct debits are triggered from the payee end. i.e. they (effectively) contact your bank and demand the money. Obviously they can only do that if the bank has a record of you authorising them to take the money. So the normal thing is for the payee to give you a form to fill out and sign, you return it to them (the payee) and they then pass it to your bank.
... sorry - pressed submit too soon.

So, probably if you phone them, they'll send you a form to fill out (rather than accepting a letter or e-mail confirmation).
I recently changed Bank's and informed all of the people by phone and they were happy to take The new instructions.
Why won't the bank transfer them for you? I appreciate the account already exists and a new account does not need to be opened, but the procedure for the bank is the same. Anyway, since the bank won't/can't make the transfer for you i would telephone the direct companies directly and gave them your new account details. Make sure you don't close your old account before you are happy all the dds are being taken from your new account. Hope this helps x

Thanks All, nearly all swapped now, either by phone or E mail. Only 1 wouldn't accept and is sending a form! Thanks again!
