In my Sainsburys, at the cigarette kiosk they have a collecting tin in the shape of Sooty (as in Sooty & Sweep) that says on it 'Sooty likes foreign coins too!)
According to their web site, http://www.barnardos.org.uk, any of Barnardo's charirty shops will accept donations of foreign coins, and it says that they can turn them into cash.

I work in a Post Office and we take foreign currency that we send back as unusable coin. I exchange any coins for the value of the English coin they look like. eg an American quarter I would exchange for 10p, a 5 Euro cent coin I would exchange for 1p.
Our PO takes foreign coins for the RNLI - I took a big jar down to them a couple of weeks ago.
