Getting through by telephone
This is a bit of a long shot, but I have got nowhere with other approaches to the problem.
Years ago I worked in Tobruk in Libya and after leaving I remained in contact with a family there. The last time I spoke to them by telephone was before the beginning of the fight to overthrow Ghaddafi. Since then I have been unable to get through to them. I have tried dialling their number but it comes up as "unrecognised". I have also tried the number for a bank in Tobruk that I found on the internet - no success. I spoke to the War Graves Commission, who used to employ maintenance staff for the graves in Tobruk, but they said they have no local contact there any more. Tobruk is a small, tight knit place where pretty much everyone knows everyone and if I could just get through to someone in Tobruk (a local) then I am certain a message will re-establish contact fairly quickly.
It is of course possible that lines are disrupted, that numbers have changed, etc. But because Tobruk was a known anti-Ghaddafi locality, there may equally well be bad news of my friends. I very much want to find out how they are so I am looking for any Tobruk telephone number known to be active and reachable from the UK. Can anyone help ?
