Our mortgage was paid off 9 years ago, we need to know who it was with but can't remember. Bank say they can't help as their records don't go back that far. Any ideas please?

Can you remember how you went about choosing the mortgage provider? Did you walk into a branch? Get it from work?
Can i ask why you need to know? Could any other information serve the same purpose?
If it's regarding a possible PPI/endowment misselling claim you need to check it's not too late
May be worth asking Land Registry if they keep any historic records of Charges registered on the property.
When you paid off your mortgage surely you kept receipts
It might be worth checking your credit record through Experian or others- I'm not sure how far they go back though

Mr M was made redundant with no redundancy 'pay out' (just government statutory) we had to sell our house and downsize to pay off our mortgage and afford to live. We think paperwork was lost in the move. We've been told that we might qualify for PPI compensation but don't have long to claim.
As far as I am aware there isn't a time bar on PPI/MPPI claims - yet
If you had PPI/MPPi why didn't you claim on it at the time

We've been told there's a 10 year limit, we weren't aware you could make any claims then - maybe we had too much on our minds at the time.
According to the Watchdog site:
Is there a time limit for making a claim?

You must complain to the ombudsman within six years of the event complained about, or three years after you first became aware that you may have grounds for complaint, whichever is longest. For example, if you were sold PPI in 2007, you may still be able to take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service if you only became aware of the possible mis-selling last year.
If your PPI policy has expired, you may still be able to claim, as the provider still may have broken the rules on mis-selling.
Are PPI policies still available to purchase?
The sale of PPI policies are predicted to shrink dramatically; some banks have even stopped selling them altogether. Banks and lenders who want to continue selling PPI will have to abide by the FSA’s new rules, thereby being much more careful about how they sell them to borrowers. Separately, the Competition Commission is bringing new rules that will stop lenders selling PPI at the point where they grant a loan.
I received a letter this morning re PPI and the deadline for me is 30th August 2014. Don't know if this applies to everyone.
With regards to your mortgage can't you remember which solicitor you used?
If you had an MPPI policy it was there for you to claim on when your husband was made redundant.
masma- I think grannygrump is asking why didn't you claim under your MPPI policy when your husband was made redundant rather than why you didn't put in a misselling claim
The letter you got this morning- was it definitely PPI or was it about CCP?
I am not sure who the letter was from? Do the people who sent the letter not know which company your MPPI was with?

Not received any letter, wasn't aware that we could've claimed when he was made redundant, too many things going on at the time, I had to leave family and friends to move somewhere we could afford then just before we moved my sisiter died. We were talking about it and wondered if we had a chance to claim. Solicitor is a good idea.
It just seems strange masma, that you paid for Personal Protection Insurance but didn't use it when you needed it most.

Nevertheless there are lost of tips here to help you claim against miss selling. The most useful top of all is not to pay a huge fee for the privilege but to make the claim yourself once you have tracked down your lender.

Problem is that if it's actually MPPI (which it sounds like) misselling allegations are far harder to sustain than PPI - very few claims succeed. The experts on MSE will probably tell you not to waste your time
You can find this out here at the Land Registry. www.landregistry.gov.uk
Good Luck
Have you had any luck tracing it, masma?
