Claiming Mileage Allowance From Hmrc
can anyone help me with the above. my friend has been working for a care agency who pays her mileage for the use of her own car. they don't pay her as much as hmrc allow, and she has claimed the rest for the tax year 2013 to 2014. She has now left this job and will not in future be using her car for work purposes. would she be able to now claim the mileage she has accrued from the beginning of the 2014 tax year, until her leaving date, or will she have to wait until the end of the 2014 tax year. the form doesn't have any blank spaces to complete any kind of explanation as to why this claim is coming in now and i cant find anything on the website relating to timing of claims.

Every time I've reclaimed mileage I haven't been sent an actual cheque, they adjusted my tax code for the following year.
I'd be surprised if your friend could claim back during the current tax year. I have just completed a self assessment in order to claim back tax overpaid in April 2013 and was told when I tried to do it last year that I would have to wait until the end of the current tax year. Their argument would be although your friend doesn't think she'll claim any more as she's left that job, she might do.

I think you can opt to have either a refund or your tax code adjusted, in the same way that you can do this if you owe them. i fill in a tax return every year and the form ask me to choose which i want to do. so far as claiming for mileage during the current year, its hard to know. she has filled in the form anyway, with a note attached to the effect that she is now in a permanent job and will not be able to claim mileage. they will make the decision and no doubt she will have to go with that.
