Cheque Received In The Name Of My Dead Husband

I recently received a cheque from overseas for under £100.00 made out in the name of my dead husband. My bank has returned this as my account is no longer a joint account - it was, understandably, changed into my name after my husband died.
Is there any way round this other than returning it to the sender and asking for it to be replaced in my name?

I had a similar situation a couple of years ago and wrote to the person in their language. Simply go to the translate page on google and type out your letter, and as you do so the foreign translation come up on the right of the screen. Then just print and cut off what you don't want to send.

Don't know in Ireland but when it happened to me 4 years ago, That's what I had to do in the UK. Sender was no problem, they just reissued the cheque.

Thanks. Will have a think about it.
Haven't given you the whole picture and returning the cheque may make things worse.
Since they won't accept the cheque at the bank it is of no use to you.

Can you tell the sender to send a valid one without actually returning it ?

Will have a try. Problem arises that I have to communicate in Portuguese.
might be worth asking on here if anyone speaks Portugese and could do you a letter?

Hmmm. If you are going to do this, keep the language simple and put it back through google translate (Portuguese to English) before sending. Google translate is amazing but not 100% accurate.
Have just had a thought - the cheque was in the name of your husband, and assuming that there an accompanying letter with it, if it was in English then reply in English. Failing that, the translate page on google will do, but as woofgang says don't get technical. Good luck whatever you decide.
I would suggest that Google translate is nowhere near the 100% as has been suggested, nearer 40% if you are lucky.

Do you have a school near to you where a language teacher would be able to help you.?

I"ll have a go at that.
The cheque came as part of a tear-off sheet with just an address and the amount on the non-cheque part.
Thanks everyone.
