If BBC3 is moving online to, as we're told, save money, how much money will it actually save? It will still be broadcasting, just on a different medium - why not just get rid of it completely? And what will happen to the now 'spare' channel?

Big cut to budget - the programmes aired online will not run to a timed schedule as tv does, so there will be less content but the content will be available 24/7. The best of BBC3 programmes will also be shown on BBC1 or BBC2 at some point.

The spare channel is going to be BBC1+1.

The estimated saving is £30m per year. A large part of that sum will probably come from the BBC no longer having to pay the transmitter owners (Arqiva) for broadcasting the channel via terrestrial TV, with similar savings coming about through not having to pay Astra for satellite access.

The spare capacity could, for example, be used to increase the number of local BBC radio stations using that multiplex but, given that the whole point of removing BBC Three was to save money, it seems unlikely that any additional BBC programming (of either TV or radio) will be added to the multiplex.

They should just stick with BBC 1 and 2 and radios 1,2,3 & 4, that's it. They dont need to have any local radio stations. We have hundreds of commercial radio stations. The money saved can go towards making quality programs or, now here's a thought, reducing the licence fee.

I really enjoy BBC4 and BBC local radio. I don't want to be bombarded by adverts when I tune in.
