I have just received notification of a tax rebate - Very nice . They always used to include a cheque for the money but now you have to go on line - Which I'm not keen on for finance - if you want to receive the money on 3-5 days. If you don't claim online within 45 days they will send a payable order. Seems a little unfair. Any ideas as to how to get the payment the old way - but sooner than 45 days?

You could ring them there will a telephone number on the letter they have sent you. You could ask.
I would check that this is genuine before going on line. Does the online claim involve giving your bank details etc?
Just out of curiosity, how did you receive this notification?
If it was by post, addressed to you in person, it's prob kosher - although I'd check anyway?
If it was via an email, addressed, Dear Sir, etc - then it's more than likely a scam :(
I assume notification was by letter and not email as HM Revenue will not email. If email suggest it is more likely a scam and ignore.

No it was by post and the web page they direct you to seems kosher I assume that they will ask for bank details to pay the money in but I haven't got that far yet
I would still ring and ask for a cheque to be sent rather than giving bank details.

Thank you

Just rang them - and not a problem they will send a cheque but it will take up to 3 weeks "and then you have to take it to the bank" so we encourage people to go on line. The young lady was very pleasant and requested the payment whilst I was on the line - but it was a 'take it or leave it' situation.

Thank you all for your answers
You can't be too careful.
I got one of these letters a couple of weeks ago and decided to wait the 45 days, because I am also reluctant to give bank details to a web site. Should be aroundthe middle of October I get the payable order.
Depending on what the tax rebate is for - they may already have your bank details.

If they do not have your bank details provide them next time you phone up and they will issue any future overpayments directly.
I too received a rebate and activated this online. It is very secure and they don't ask for bank details as they already have for your pension payments.
I had a similar letter today and dealt with it online. There were lots of security questions and a code you have to enter which is phoned to you. It seems more secure than many web sites.

Thank you for that If I'm lucky enough to get another one I'll do it on line
Give HMRC a ring to make sure it is genuine. Then, if it is, go online and secure your payment.

I had a rebate notification a few weeks ago. I could see it was genuine because there were details contained within it (income details from many sources). all of which tied up with my records. I nonetheless gave them a ring (on a number I had previously used rather than the one on the letter) and confirmed it was Kosher. Made my application on line and got the dosh within three days.
Granny rang them this afternoon.
