How do I close a deceased person's PayPal account?
To close the account of a deceased customer, we need to receive certain documentation to meet legal requirements. Once we have these documents, we will help to close the account as quickly as possible.
We will require different documentation depending on whether or not the customer in question had a will or died without one in place (died intestate). These documents are:If a Will exists, we need a certified copy of the will, which identifies the Executor. If no Will exists, we need a statement of who the likely Administrator is, their interest in the estate and relationship with the deceased.
We also require:The contact details of the Executor or Administrator (in particular, an email address and a phone number). It would also help to provide any details that may help us locate the relevant account (e.g. email address, phone number or home address of the deceased).A government-issued photo ID of the Executor or Administrator. The original or a certified copy of the death certificate. If already obtained, it would also be helpful to have a certified copy of the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration.
Once you have organised the above documents we’ll need to speak with you by phone. Below this answer, click Contact Us, then click Call us and on the following screen click Call us as a guest. Our phone number and opening hours will be shown on screen.
Once we've received the documents, we'll review them and let you know if we have any further requirements. We will usually be able to let you know if there's a balance on the account and, if positive, we can release this by arranging to:Withdraw it to the bank account linked to the PayPal account;Withdraw it to a PayPal account in the Executor’s/ Administrator's name;Issue a wire transfer to a bank account, at a cost of $40, or currency equivalent. (For this option, you must also provide a statement of the bank account).
Note: For amounts under £5,000, we require an indemnity form to be entered into by the Executor or Administrator in advance of releasing the balance. If the balance is above this level, we require the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration to be obtained before closing the account and releasing the balance.
If no balance exists, we'll review the documents and, upon approval, we will close the account.
