You can transfer £ 1250 of your personal allowance ( if you earn income below your Personal Allowance - this is usually £12,500. )

How do you actually go about doing it , and what documentation do you need ?

I believe you get it backdated. We did it when the scheme started.
You can backdate your claim to include any tax year since 5 April 2015 that you were eligible for Marriage Allowance. If your partner has since died you can still claim - phone the Income Tax helpline.
I did this Baz with amazingly quick results

Thanks
Spar, I just filled the form in online
Easy peasy Bobbs,lol.
i just did a letter with the appropriate details to HMRC
I used the link and did it from there , OH has a sizeable pension and paid a lot of tax, now he pays £200 less on tax each month than he did
that's odd bobbi - £200 les per month sound enormous - the link says you can save £250 per year
Bobbisox, I too don't understand. If the transferred allowance itself is only £1250, how can using it result in an extra £2400 a year?
Yes, the maximum is £250 since the maximum allowance you can transfer is £1250
I can assure you that’s how much he saves but without going into our financial situation on here, you’ll just have to either believe me or not

You can claim up to 5 years though so this would mean a bigger refund initially
That's fine, Bobbisox - at least we know it isn't solely because of the transfer mentioned above. That wasn't clear from your replies to the question - and maybe gave people false hope of large sums!
There is a married couple's allowance for those born before 1935 which can give bigger savings. Does that apply Bobbisox?
If you have reduced his tax bill by £200 a month that must be for some other reason though- a reason I can't immediately think of- but it isn't this transfer of personal allowance for married couples that Bazille is referring to
I apologise for any misleads given Nical
Just asked him, Maybe I’ve got my sums wrong haha, £200 per month would put up there with the high earners, sorry bout the confusion ( I just spend more ) :0)
Thanks, Bobbisox, your answers made the process sound so simple, so straightforward - and so lucrative!
Haha, me being a Rich biatchi lol
