Just learned my branch of TSB is closing in January. Not happy at all. I am on friendly terms with all the ladies who work there. So much so I rang the bank one day, no reply. But got a phone call to say they recognised my voice from answerphone and did I have a problem.
Only one bank left in the town, that is Lloyds. I have an account there too. I class that as my emergency account.
I understand I can use the Coop bank to pay in cheques for TSB.
Such bad news for Cinderford.

Nip into the Co-op on Dockham Road, where the main Cinderford Post Office is now located, and do your routine banking there:

Thank you so much Chris. You do so much to help everyone. It is so much appreciated.
Yes, we had the same problem here, all three of our local banks closed and now we have to use the post office counter that has since been set up in our newsagents. It does offer limited services though.
Our two most local have shut very recently too. We don't use them, except to pay in cheques, so it's still a bit of a nuisance.
You can pay in cheques with an app if you have a smartphone.

I do sympathise with the loss of bank branches, where people know you, have a little chat. It’s very sad.
Thanks clover... we'll have to have a look now x I'm not worried about chatting, we have friends for that, this is just business x
Whilst I understand your frustration at the branch closing if they are not financially viable you cannot expect a business to continue losing money

RBS our branch closed - and I knew the staff well
they were just put out onto the street ....

clearly a banking job is NOT sitting and drinking tea all day
Shocking. If there is a lesson to be learned, it is possibly that Big Employers treat nice people in banks just as they treat horny-handed workers in shipyards, or miners coughing up coal-dust (remember miners?).

They want you? You're in. They don't? Goodnight.

Once the nice manners, the tea and biscuits are stripped away. naked capitalism doesn't give a ****. Once you've learned that, the world makes a lot more sense.

An old saying I remember from years ago: 'There is no sentiment in business'.
No sentiment, no kindness, no compassion, nothing.

Yes, of course you can find it, but then it really is the exception.

Blame changing habits. People write and receive far fewer cheques than they used to, and get cash (if they need it) from the supermarket (or the hole in the wall). We (most of us) have less need to go into the bank than 20 or 30 years ago.
I haven't been in a bank for a very long time. Can't even remember the last time.
That is very true. Years ago I used to get through a cheque book per month. I have had my current cheque book for 4 years and have written three cheques, and then only because they were postal payments and there were no other means.
TSB are closing 164 branches by the end of next year, this was in the news a few days ago, this is in addition to 82 branches this year.
They had 536 branches at the start of this year, with all the above closed this year and next they will be down to 290 branches. No point in keeping them open if customers are not coming through the door. Its obvious that the other 290 are still viable at the moment.
I know how you feel Caran, my local bank shut fairly recently and now my nearest one is another town away, alright for me in that I drive, but not everybody does. I suspect the one in the next town will close within two years anyway. I still use cheques and cash, but find I have to use my bank card more and more now. I will only bank online if hell freezes over!! I used to love the friendly ladies who worked in my bank, all without jobs now.
