Happy Birthday Cash Machine

First one went into operation this day in 1967 and needed a six digit PIN.

They were a godsend when banks had very restricted opening hours and you couldn't get cashback from the supermarket.

I rarely use them now.  When was the last time you used the 'hole in the wall'?

I'm trying to remember when I first used one and I really can't remember.  I used to cash cheques at the post office on Saturday mornings when I needed money.

Use cash for window cleaner,gardener,parking tickets and random donations

I pay my window cleaner by bank transfer, he prefers it.  He was mugged years ago one Friday evening after collecting his monies.

We were with Midland Bank in the 1960s and I remember the first card we had had a maximum number of uses (about 10) - a dent was stamped into the card each time we used it.

Yesterday, I still like to carry cash. I don't use takeaway very often but have noticed a few where I live are cash only.

I use cash to pay my cleaner and the lady who comes out to cut my hair.  

I use an ATM every two weeks or so.

Before the advent of these cards the only way to get cash from your bank was to either visit your own branch or make advance arrangements to use a different branch.

Or cash a cheque which I had to do often because it was very difficult to get to the bank. Of course that cost, back in the days when banks charged for every cheque issued

This morning about 10am outside Tesco

This morning at 11.23 and again at 11.24. Reason? OH was struggling to read the screen at the next ATM (sunlight) and was in danger of losing his card, so I leaned over to retrieve the situation for him.  I did so, but turned back justin time to see my cash being sucked back into the machine's innards!

Cue long telephonic trudge through bank's security this afternoon to  report this and arrange for cash to be paid back into my account.

Culdn't live without them though.  :)

They are a problem when they don't function properly.

Can anyone remember when they became commonplace?  I'm thinking late 70s but I could be wrong
