Tate Modern has announced it has received a major gift from a couple of art collectors in the form of a painting by the US modern artist Joan Mitchell.

It was unveiled on Thursday as one of a group of works being donated by the Miami-based philanthropists, Jorge M and Darleen Pérez.

The six-metre-long triptych, entitled Iva 1973, can now be viewed for free at the London gallery next to Mark Rothko's Seagram Murals.

Tate director Maria Balshaw said the gift was "one of the most important" it has received, describing the donation as "transformational".

I can't say it does much for me.

It looks like a wall that's been stripped of its wallpaper, revealing mould and patches of old paint.

Doesn't do anything for me either.

The last time I saw artwork like that was on the front of my fridge and stayed there until the next priceless painting from a child was handed to me.

Perhaps Jorge M and Darleen Pérez are glad to get rid of it.

And Joan Mitchell was never such a major figure as the article makes out.

Looks like someone is trying to choose a colour to paint the outside loo.

What a mess, still if someone likes it...

The Tate do host some odd things, remember the crack?  And there was an exhbition of 💩 once where people were sitting on stools pndering it.  'Er indoors came along and commented it looked like our back garden (we had two boxers at the time) and got some very disaproving looks.

When I saw the headline I thought of Andrew Tate and hoped someone had given him a bible.

I think there's few that need its teachings more.

It could have been mislabelled, originally destined for The Tat.

Art for art's sake...

This whole International art market is only about one thing - money; moving it (and often laundering it) around the world.

In this case, I suspect this couple have several of this artists works, the price of which is heading south because abstract expressionism is passé. The main exponent whose prices will remain high is Jackson Pollock because he is a household name, was the first in the field & died spectacularly a long time ago in an automobile accident.

What are they to do about it ? Well, why not give one away to the Tate London & gain massive amount of publicity for theselves & the artist, thereby potentially increasing the value of her work?

Next: in the coming years sell the others for increased prices  - win-win.

Be careful, that could be construed as Islamaphobic and you could have the Rozzers bangin on your door soon, given that Tate is now apparemty a Muslim!

It's the Tate.
