how much does the law say should be allocated for a family of four for: housekeeping (food, etc) and clothes? i am in debt and recieve family credit and i have read that this is the amount the law says a family needs to survive on and that any extras like non-priority debt cannot be met on this income. can someone clarify this please?

I am not aware that any such law exists.

Contact the Citizens' Advice Bureau and make an appointment with their debt management team.
Not sure if actually legal, but a figure to come up with would be somewhere around the current levels for Income Support as that it supposedly the minimum you need to get by (although if you are on IS then you don't pay rent or Council Tax).
