how long can you keep a cheque without cashing it before you can no longer cash it? Similarly, how long can a person hold a cheque you've given them without cashing it before they never can?

Banks will not normally process cheques that are more than six months old.

That is the case for cheques you have received and issued.

It is normal practice in such circumstances to ask the issuer of the cheque to replace it.
If, in exceptional circumstances, you find a bank that will honour a cheque dated more than 6 months previously (which is an anti-fraud guideline only) the cheque will become legally invalid after 6 years.
