Getting dollars without paying fees

I write for two magazines based in New York, and they pay me in dollar cheques.

My bank is charging me �10.00 per cheque to convert them to sterling, which I think is a hefty amount.

Is there any way i can get my payment without paying this fee every time?

I am sure this is a common situation - and there is a simple way out of it, but I need to know what that is please.

maybe change to a bank who do not charge these fees?

Whilst they do charge a fee it's a lot less than �10 unless it's a really big cheque

Can you get them to pay you directly into your account? Or what about into a paypal account?

Zacmaster - they make their money by loading the exchange rate rather than charging a declared commission. Usually by not that much - less than the banks, etc.
