Using Maestro In the UK

I have a Maestro direct debit card from a European bank account. I can use it in ATM's in the UK but am unable to pay for goods and services with it as it has a much shorter card number than usual UK cards and retailers do not recognise it even tho' they might have signs up advertising that they accept Maestro.

Anybody know what's going on?
