stop cheque

I asked for the bank to stop a cheque they advised me that they will do so but cheque stopped still went though and money debited from my account. I complained and they wrote saying the payment had been made due to a BANK ERROR however the payee has received the funds and the resson I gave for stopping the cheque " did not know who the cheque was to". To resolve the issue they want to ask a few question . Am i obliged to answer after all should they just not deal with it and credit me back.
