joint bank account
2 Answers
I have a joint bank account with an ex partner who is running it hundreds of pounds into debt. I haven't used the account myself for almost a year as it is primarily in his name & I am the second holder. I've been told to cancel it we must both go into the bank with ID & we can do this at seperate times. I will go to cancel my part but I know he will not go. I know I'm responsible for half of his debt but wherre do I stand now if I can't get him to cancel.
I'm out of my head with worry.

Joint accounts carry Joint & Several Liability which means the bank can go against both of you or either of you for the full amount. Tell the bank immediately that future withdrawals must be authorised by you both. They will not allow this though if he has a debit card on the account - until the card is returned.
