debts against my name

ive recieved a couple of letters over the past weeks demanding payments for debts that arent mine, the letters are quite threatening and telling me that unless i pay them in 7 days a court order will be made against me and bailiffs will come etc. Ive rang theses seperate companies and explained that they have the wrong person but because i have the same surname as the ones on the letter, they say thats the connection there making. Needless to say this is stressing me and my partner out and its putting a strain on our relationship. Ive been told that basically this will be the end of it now and shouldnt here anymore from them but i cant help but still worry. What if someone has used my identity? will i be liable? I ask the company if i should take it to the police but they dont think there is a need for this, what do you think i should do?
