Listening to this story on radio this morning and it really got my goat....

I mean... just cos somone might live in a £1m house - doesnt necessarily mean they have the kind of income to support an extra £2,500 per year in tax?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8265821.stm

Really makes me cross.. I hope they dont ever get in power and I hope the other (just as bad) parties dont get any wise ideas...

We all work hard - we all pay probably enough taxes already.. why can we not just be left with SOME of our hard earned money eh?????

yeah but we dont want them giving the other 'hard working' politicians any ideas eh! We pay enough already!!! I'm ratty about it - as they seem to assume that just cos someone lives in a big house - doesnt necessarily mean they have an income with lots of disposable cash!

I expect the Tories will be in next as the whole country seems sick of Labour now... lets hope they dont think the Libe Dem idea was a good one eh!
Nick Clegg was interviewed on the radio this morning and although proclaiming to be the party of honesty and openess appeared very shifty. He was asked about a hung parliament where neither of the major parties assumed overall control what policies he would stick to and which party he had preferences for.

Liberal taxation plans have always succeded in giving out more than they collect in taxation.
Tax Credit fraud runs at over 1 BILLION pounds a year. Criminal gangs are making up familes and children to milk the system.

Why do you never hear politicians saying they are going to reduce benefit fraud, why is it always they are going to tax those pople in work or with large houses.

Because those of us that are prepared to work to the best of our abilities and achieve as much as we can for our families are an easy target.

It is far easier to target an existing income stream than it is to stop fradulent outgoings.

The middle classes (and I unashamedly consider myself to be in that bracket) are over-taxed as it is, if the Lib-Dems had it their way we'd simply pass all of our earnings to them at source and then they could provide us with pocket money.

Still, as Dan says, they could promise anything - they could promise all people a year tax-free and a go on their wives - but it is utterly irrelevant. Even if Parliament were hung with the Lib-Dems having the balance of power, they wouldn't stand a chance of their more lunatic ideas being approved.
Anyone can see a flaw in their argument to collect a tax on houses worth a £million or more. Now who puts the value on the house. Does that mean we need a nation of pen pushers going round to houses to check their value. Can you imagine the disputes of those on the borderline.
Never heard of 'Council Tax', Rov. It is nothing more than a simple extension to the existing arrangement whereby folks in big houses pay more for their locally-provided services than folks in small houses. Since the Lib-Dems policy is to develop a system of locally-raised income tax, it can hardly be a surprise to anyone that they produce a policy that starts to do just this.
Since they aren't a serious contender for the top job next May, as others have pointed out, it is somewhat academic anyway.
