four working days normally
Minimum time can be same day - if both payee/payer use the same branch.
Nationwide is 3 days.
20 odd years ago I used to work for NatWest and a cheque cleared at 12 noon on the 4th working day after you'd paid it in (eg you paid a cheque in on a Monday and it was clear by 12 noon on the Thursday). Earlier this month I paid a cheque in to my NatWest account on a Tuesday and was told it would be cleared a week on Wednesday, that's EIGHT working days!
