Gas supply to house.
6 Answers
I've just purchased a house & need to have a gas supply to it & meter installed. I was under the impression that only British Gas could could do this? Are there any other companies who can do this (I live in North Wales). Also British Gas stated it would take upto 4 months to complete -is this correct?

Yes I think it is Wales and West utilities thats who did ours (We are in Abergele) But a gas company has to take responsibili ty for the meter. EDF did ours

dont know what the situation is now under full deregulation but any of the major gas marketers could hook folk (small businesses and large houses) up to the Transco grid in the phase before all residences came on - and we did it far cheaper and quicker than BG - no compromise on safety as, in my case, the Co was owned by Shell and Exxon.......
Would have thought if it was a bona fide supplier with certified engineers, this could be done outside BG's domain

Need I say be careful of cost vs length of contract - especially in a rising market - and if Qatar goes bang, then gas prices will go through the roof.
Also be careful to see what the quote covers and what 'variables' there are. If you are some distance to the mains line, this could really hurt and push you to say consider putting in a bulk LPG tanks.....in other words look at all the comparative possibilities.

I can't comment about N Wales but when I worked for gas services company in Scotland it was the case that approved contractors can connect domestic customers to the grid. Usually there will be a preferred contractor in your area. If you need mains laid for any distance the cost can get quite high. If a main is nearby and there are no extraordinary difficulties then it should not be too expensive.
