I'm sure she can apply for a Bereavement Payment of £2000.00 straightaway. I did and it came through very quickly. I think any Funeral Director would do what ummmm says or at least give you 30 days to pay it.

Sorry to hear that, pastboy, but the cost does vary a lot between funeral directors. Our family paid £400 in 1988, and then £770 in 1993, but think costs have risen since then quite a bit. Can anyone here tell me the cheapest cost of one now; may be around the £2,000 mark?
What happens if a tramp is found dead in the street, and has no money and no relatives? Who pays for the cost of the funeral then?

It soon adds up, my husbands cost £2,300 in 2008, that did include a double burial plot.

Mamy - I paid £2,500 for my partners funeral in 2008 - driven into a "good" funeral by her daughter and son - they felt guilty, but it was a cremation rather than buying a "plot". But did involve horse drawn carriages and suitable limosines - and doves being released after the ceromony.
I still think of her every day, twas my choice to spend that money - if you don't have the money to spend - it's not important. OP - get the grant and spend it . My will just do the cheapest you can from your inheritance and use the money you have saved wisely - hope there will be some left

my brother died 4 weeks ago today,if you get any money for the funeral they told me it was only a loan and had to pay it back,we managed to get the cremation for £1000,the cheapest as he was not insured,my family and myself had to make the money up,the council in london was not going to give us the keys of his flat unless we agreed to pay,if we did'nt pay they said they would sell his effects to make up the money.
