A week on . . .

. . . and I'm still not sure whether I should feel proud or annoyed.

Five days before the Grand National, I tipped Ballabriggs to win.

My problem was that, because I was aware of the concerns over animal welfare, I wasn't really happy about supporting the race by betting on it. However, by Saturday morning, I'd decided that I'd put £10 each way on Ballabriggs. I planned to do it as soon as I'd collected my (77 year old) friend from her holiday accommodation on the Suffolk coast, and driven her (and her two dogs) home.

However, during the journey she expressed her total disgust at the treatment of the horses. By the time we got back home, I'd decided not to place my bet.

Ballabriggs won, at 14/1. So should I feel proud of sticking to my principles, or kick myself for not placing the bet?

I feel the same, confused - I had a flutter before all the cruelty discussion about the GN broke out, the sport doesn't seem likely to be banned. IMO.

I'm not a betting person, I'm at least doubly not a betting person on the GN. I will not support horses getting killed regularly in the name of sport.

The crazy thing is that I've only ever placed a few bets in my life and normally, based upon the study of statistics (which formed a major part of my degree studies), the one race which I'd never even consider betting on would be the Grand National. But, for some strange reason (possibly linked to having predicted the outcome here on AB!) I felt compelled to place a bet this year!
