Cr@p cars which are cheap to insure!
Can someone please give me any suggestions for rubbish old cars which would be cheap for a 17 year old to insure, I started off with a rover 214 which I struggled to afford so changed to a Fiat Cinquecento 900cc which was still quite expensive at £1700! Unfortuantely, I wrote that car off this evening and am now looking for a new car which will be cheaper than that was. Any suggestions please?

Benny, do not take this as an insult, your 17yrs you have just wrote your car off! how come? with respect, if the majority of young drivers reduced their speed the insurance would come down in price, I'm not knocking you or what type of driver you are but more often than not you hear stories about drivers getting killed or causing an accident due to inexperience, to reduce your premium go for an advanced driving course this will reduce your cost, keep to a low CC car as the one you have just had, experience comes with time & time gives you experience & experience in driving will reduce your premium.
Sorry to hear that, but glad to hear you are all right after this prang! Skelliemonster's post is the most helpful. I do not think you will get any cheaper quotes than that at your age; you need to wait about another 25 years or so, and then the quotes may come down a little bit.
Hope this helps, or you can always use a horse or cart. Would this be acceptable for you, or is it too slow?

As RAVID says it's the possibility of what you may run into that gives underwriters the willies. Years ago a pal of mine had a £50 Ford Cortina Mk III, he ran into the back of a Rolls Royce and although he was only going real slow at the time the claim was over £8000. And that was before the ambulance-chasing lawyers reared their ugly heads. Run into the back of a car with four occupants and you'll be talking big bucks in injury payouts before you even have an assessor look at the bent bumper.
So a cheap, rubbish car for a 17 year old? Suzuki Wagon R, Hyundai Accent 3 cylinder diesel? Bicycle? Buss pass? Shanks's pony?
