Would a NatWest Visa Debit Card be accepted in countries around the World, or do I also need a Credit Card? I only ask cos I've been shocked to receive a charge of about £240 for simply having a NatWest MasterCard (so I'm now considering binning it) - is that right? I didn't think you had to pay a charge for having a credit card unless you exceeded the limit.
That debit card is acceptable world wide - but has above average charges for overseas use.
There is no charge for just having a Natwest Mastercard (unless it's the super duper premium one that has lots of added benefits for the fee) - but there may be charges for (mis-)using one.
That charge seems excessive, what's it for? The Metro bank debit card is free to use abroad even for cash withdrawals. You have to go to a branch (London) to open an account.
I've never had a problem using a Visa debit card abroad. (It's cheaper to use it than to obtain foreign currency).
Some credit cards do have an annual charge but, where such a charge exists, it's nowhere near to £240. Further, Natwest's Mastercard doesn't appear to be one of those cards which levies such a charge:

I have a nat west visa credit card and use abroad (Africa) all the time - have been very happy with it - always tell them prior to travelling that there will be unusual debits to the card - never use my debit card though
