How can I best get this checked? Some b******s have stolen my info from somewhere and have tried to get a loan from Nationwide. They wrote to me today. They won't give me much info - which annoys me too! After all its my identity these idiots are trying to use. I will need to check my credit reference soon, to make sure that no problems have been caused by this. Is there any way I can find out more about how this happened - further details of the attempted fraud etc? Where is the best place to check my credit reference without paying for it? Thanks

It only costs £3 to get your credit checked by a reputable company like Experian, so it's worth a tiny outlay - and if anything is there which isn't correct, you can get it removed or amended.
All 3 of the main credit reference agencies are obliged to provide you with a copy of the information which they hold about you for a fee of just £2 each.

However two of them also all offer free trial periods. (Just remember to cancel the agreements after you've received your reports, and you'll pay nothing at all):

I doubt they will give you an explanation of the fraud. I had a similar experience once and they credit card would not give me any information. The main thing is that you haven't lost out and your credit file has not been affected so, as others have said, you must check this. I know it's worrying and frustrating not to know what happened but I'm not quite sure how it would help you to know and I can see from their point of view to say nothing rather than say something that could breach confidentiality or rebound on them.
