Comparing audience figures, by the way, is rather dubious. Morecame and Wise had their heyday at a time when there were only 2 or 3 TV channels. Nowadays there is a lot more choice.
It's a typical, highly emotive and subjective piece of Daily Mail tosh. It starts with a populist headline to "get them going", works itself up into a lather, does its usual "critics also pointed out ..." bit (which critics in particular I wonder?) and only really seriously addresses the issue right at the bottom where you get the sane response from the BBC that there is not, in fact, a direct comparison being made between Hansen and M&W at all.

Probably not. Assuming they were still with us(!)
People as a rule tune in to match of the Day to watch the footie, and other people tune into repeats of Morecame and Wise for a bit of "old times sake" light entertainment. Putting comedians on to commentate on football is likely to irritate the football fans while not really impressing fans of the comedians either.
None of which proves or disproves whether Allan Hansen is worth his fee as a pundit, of course.
Anyway, that's a serious opinion - I'm sure there's endless potential for a bit of fun here :-)
