Where does the money come from that pays university staff - lecturers and support staff. Are they public sector workers? Or privately funded?

HEFCE - the Higher Education Funding Council for England

quote

"Finance and assurance

We are responsible for substantial sums of public funding - £6,507 million in 2011-12, announced in HEFCE 2011/07. This money is provided by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and allocated by us according to principles laid out in our funding method. In doing this, we work to ensure value for money and that funds are used for the intended purposes."
I suspect the answer is they are private sector workers (universities being independent bodies) that are largely publicly funded.
