Paypal - Refund for Item bought on EBay
18 Answers
I purchased a lovelly jacket via an Ebay Shop. I sent the jacket back to exchange for a different size.
The kind gentleman said he would refund me monies paid for the first jacket. I paid via paypal therefore I would expect him to refund me the same way I paid.
He emailed me to say item was received and he would refund me there and then.
I've checked my Paypal account and no payment has been received. My Q is how long does it take for refunds to be received via Paypal.
I am getting abit concerned as it's almost £100, although I will ring his shop tomorrow morning.

It ought to be almost immediate once it has gone throught the PayPal processes, but it doesn depend how quickly he set the refund in place, or which way he's doing it - reversing the transaction or remitting money to you as a separate transaction. There is nothing to stop you opening a dispute on eBay either, to say that you know that the returned item has been received but you haven't had your money yet. I would.
The refund would have been instant, I have an ebay shop abd I am given the option of offering a refund, and when I do the customer emails almost instantly and says thank you, refund received. So You need to contact the seller. also, did you check out His feedback? have a look, are they all satisfied customers?
( you do get a few whingers, no matter what you do, so expect a few red marks in every few hundred). if the feedback is bad, then get ready to report your problem to paypal/ebay. if feedback relatively good, then speak to or email the seller and explain the situation before taking action via ebay.

old was is name, sorry I have to disagree with you. I have had to refund people their money very occasionally and the refund going through the paypal refund buyer bit can be far from instant. It depends if you have any funds in your account for a start. I am concerned that muchlovex will get the impression that if the transaction isnt instant that there is something wrong, which is not the case.

grasscarp that link is to the USA version of paypal. I have a paypal account and it is linked to my debit card (NOT credit card) I also have instant transfer between my paypal account and my bank account . As long as you are set up as I am you can do instant refunds as long as there is sufficient money in the combined paypal and bank account. Debit card is on the same bank account as the one linked to paypal. You can not do refunds from a credit card but you can from a debit card there is an important diffrence.
I purchased something using Paypal for £190. My son had purchased same item and I had duplicated it, so seller set up refund immediately. Mine was done through Paypal/debit card but Paypal put a 'hold' on my refund for 7 working days, which apparently is not uncommon. Seller issued refund straight away, but Paypal do it in their own time.
I am speaking from my own experience. I have my debit card (and a credit card) linked to my paypal account. I also have experienced a lot of time passing between initiating a refund and the person receiving the same, to the extent that I have offered after that - that I can pay to the person's email address, which does seem to be instant. Since I have had this happen to me I wanted to offer my twopenneth that a refund is not necessarily instant. I am sorry if the link I happened to find was American rather than English.

Receiving the refund
You will be notified via email as soon as the seller indicates that they will initiate the refund. Usually they will send the refund within a couple of days, and at the latest 30 days, after you’ve started the return.
After the seller has sent the refund to your PayPal account, the case will close automatically. You can transfer the money from your PayPal to your bank account or use the PayPal balance for other purchases on eBay.
Timeframes: A business seller is legally obliged to issue the refund within 30 days after they accepted your return or the cancellation of your contract with them.
Even if a business seller issues the refund immediately, it may take several days before the money is transferred to your account.
The last sentence says it all.

Hi all, Thank you for your helpful answers.
Grasscarp - you are indeed correct about a delay in payment back to the customer. I called the seller and he has deffo refunded. I then checked my Paypal account and it confirms there that the refund is confirmed. I called Paypal and they said that it can take up to 30 days for refund to go back on my card.

Old-wos-is-name - this is a debate I keep having with mr mac. I only ever buy with them and at no point when opening my account was I given an option to deposit funds with paypal. Everything I buy comes off my card. Mr mac on the other hand, has always sold through ebay and he didn't have a card connected to his account until relatively recently - all his transactions went through his account which had to have money in it.
