Water metering.. can I get back unmetered charges?

We recently had a water meter fitted (May 2012), after paying unmetered charges for about 10 years at this small 2-bedroom property. The difference in cost is so big that not only are we now in credit but the water company is refunding an amount to us for the previous half-year's bill. Since the amount between being metered and unmetered is so different, I'm wondering if there's any way I can claim back any part of the over-assessed bills that we've paid pre-meter or am I living in a fool's paradise?

I think there's a good chance you will save money then.
There is a risk of course that anyone who changes may develop leaks and get a huge bill

the meter is pretty sensitive - ours is in the grass verge and registers a dripping tap

not that you'd want to be studying the meter very often!

I am on my own in a 5 bedroom detached house and my water bill has gone down by over 70%.
I have a shower every day, water my garden, and wash my car once a week.

a few years ago the local water company wanted people to pay for meters so as I am tight I refused. Four years ago they offered meters for free , as there are only 2 of us, we went for it and have been saving a good pile of money ever since.
