Some printers can use special photo ink cartridges which are even more overpriced then the normal ones and need to be used with proper photo paper to get a good result.
Make sure you inquire as to the price of genuine replacement ink as new printers often come with only a little bit of ink in the tank.

We have an Epson PX720WD.
It's a printer/scanner/copier and takes memory cards, etc. It has a double sided printing option and you can alter the print quality from draft to best photo. It also prints on CD's.
We always use non-genuine inks and rarely have a problem with them. The inks are that cheap, you can just take the problem cartridge out and replace it if needed.

We've had ours a few years and never had a problem with it (I hope I'm not tempting fate now !!). I reckon you should be able to pick one up for less than £100.
