I'm 33 and the pension is with standard life - it's got about 5k in it but I don't contribute to it anymore as I've started a new scheme up - I've got all the details but they've told me I can't take the cash out of the scheme I can only transfer the money into another scheme. I could really do with the money tho as my cars just broke down. Thanks
Try this.

I worked for a company for about 2 years and stayed with my second employer for the rest of my working life.
I was paying into the pension scheme of my first employer and still had a wage slip to prove it.
This service found my pension scheme but at first the trustees said I could have not had a pension with them as people had to be 21 to join.
I sent a copy of some of my wage slips to prove I had paid in.
After some fuss it was found I was due a pension of £285 per year.
The trustees wanted to transfer it into my main pension scheme but they could not take it as I would have been receiving more than two thirds of my final salary.
I have agreed to be paid once every 6 months due to the small amount.
Out of interest the trustee said he thinks I was the only employee paying into the pension scheme before I was 21.
I started paying in the day after I left school at 16.

What Standard Life have said is correct. You can't get the money out yet- you'll probably have to wait until age 55. Tax relief is given on pension contributions and in return the money is put away to help individuals save for retirement.
The only way you might have a chance is if you were contributing for less than a year or two and you only recently stopped. Even then I'm not sure but I know you can get contributions (less deductions) back if you leave within a year or two

Hi factor30
Have you got a crystal ball?.
It may be 70 in 20 years time.
Oddly enough the contract where I worked said you would be paid an immediate pension if you were made redundant at 50 and it said this on the contract of my ex fellow workers some of them wil now be 35.
I am not sure what happened to these contracts.
I got made redundant at 58.

There have been warnings about these schemes on programmes like Money Box.
You'd be lucky to get more than £100 out of them in my opinion but I don't think they'd be interested as they can't get at the money themselves until you are 55. In fact they may try to charge you a fee and then tell you they aren't able to make you an offer
